WhatsApp is testing an exciting new feature that promises to make your profile even more personal. Users will soon be able to set an alternate profile picture, which allows them to have not just one, but two WhatsApp display pictures – one for friends and one for others.
WhatsApp profiles have come a long way from just a single static image. Over time, WhatsApp has added features such as the ability to set a profile picture, status message, and even a story that can be shared with your contacts.
This continuous evolution allows users to express themselves in various ways. Now, WhatsApp is rolling out a new 2.23.24.4 version update through the Google Play Beta Program, which brings an alternate profile picture feature, and it will be available for users in a future update.
A new alternate profile feature will be available within the privacy screen regarding our profile photo and it allows users to configure a different photo and name that will be visible to those contacts who cannot see their primary profile information.
WhatsApp’s Statement
- The alternate profile feature can serve as a protective shield: it will be adding a new layer of security and privacy to the user experience as they have finally more control over their information.
- Users will be able to maintain a higher level of privacy by configuring an alternate profile and choosing different information in the future.
- In addition, this feature will prove highly advantageous once the ability to set up a WhatsApp username becomes available in the future. Many users opt to restrict profile photo visibility to their contacts only.
- By setting up an alternate profile, even users who contact you through a username will still have access to view your profile, but it will be different from your primary one.
However, the alternate profile privacy feature is under development and it will be available in a future update of the app. While I can personally say that the introduction of alternate profile pictures is a significant leap forward in personalization.
