The S Pen, which was previously only on the Note series, is now on the Galaxy S Ultra models. Although its functionality remains familiar, recent models hide a surprising secret: being unique in terms of its scent.

Upon closer inspection, the S Pen of the S22 Ultra, S23 Ultra, and S24 Ultra emits a different smell compared to its previous models. Descriptions vary between playground mulch and Sharpie marker, with some words even pointing to burnt plastic.

Thankfully this is now only a rare occurrence and not an everyday assault on my senses. The powerful aroma can only be felt through a careful attempt to smell. Criminal? A new rather rough surface epoxy rubber coating replaced the previous silver finish. This minor improvement has, unexpectedly, improved mild consistency and nature.

For example, if you compare the older material S Pen on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra to the redesigned S Pen on the S22 Ultra, the new one has a fresh, refreshing scent. However, even on newer models, the scent tends to fade away over a longer period, while on older models it lasts for 2 years or more, so a re-check may be needed if there is any noticeable wear and tear.

If you look at it on a larger scale, individual boo-boos won’t distract the consumer. But as a strange little destruction of a favorite and important feature. The option to offer an “aromatherapy” component in the new S Pen evolves into the question of whether or not Samsung might choose to do the same in the new S Pen.

Why does my s pen smell so bad?
