BOE and TCL accelerate OLED investments to defeat Samsung Display

Samsung is at the top when it comes to display tech, but now it seems that two renowned manufacturers namely BOE and TCL are accelerating their investment in OLED panel productions to defeat the Korean tech giant’s monopoly.

According to the input, BOE, China’s trusted display industry revealed a plan to invest 63 billion yuan (US$8.9 billion) in constructing an 8.6-generation OLED production line in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, especially for tablets and laptops.

Whereas, TCL has planned to start mass production of inkjet-printed OLED panels in the second Q2 of 2024 and these OLED panels are initially expected for TVs and will be produced for tablets, laptops, and other IT devices.

To be mentioned, this investment is nearly three times the 4.1 trillion won (US$3.1 billion) announced by Samsung Display in April for its 8.6-generation OLED factory. Accordingly, the IT OLED market is estimated to be about five times larger than the smartphone OLED market.
